TRANSPORT
We have the
A303 which is a main trunk route running through our area, but I would want to take a hard look at the feeder roads on and off the A303 with the local parish councils. Without careful planning these will become a major problem to rural dwellers, as ever-larger trunk road vehicles try to find an easy route from the coast towards the midlands. The Weymouth to Westbury railway needs re assessing to encourage both passenger and commercial traffic, this is a greatly under used facility which needs to be moved into the twenty first century. A facelift at Bruton Station is long overdue.
After eight years of Lib / Dem pontification on transport, I still find it impossible to travel to and from Taunton by train. A perfect example of continuous talk and no action. Which only leaves that essential of rural transport "The Car".
There is no logical reason for school transport and rural bus services to be operated as sealed and separate services. A unified transport system should be looking at the best uses of these resources. They would then be able to apply financial encouragement where it is most needed in community terms.
We still need adequate signs to direct travelers on the A303 into the centre of Wincanton. We also need a more pedestrian friendly look to the centre of the town. Wincanton still suffers from the historic problem that this was once the main A303 road to the West Country. Wide roads, narrow pavements, lack of pedestrian crossings, and no parking.
